Protest…road block… over controversial Royale Rest Cemetery

Health Minister calls meeting with Shettlewood citizens, after residents block roads this morning protesting burials at the controversial Royale Rest Cemetary...

Roads in the Hanover community of Shettlewood remain blocked this evening after residents staged a protest this morning.

Newstalk understands that the roads remained block to vehicular traffic because the police do not have the equipment to clear them.

In the meantime, in an attempt to resolve the ongoing feud between residents of Shettlewood in Hanover and Proprietors of the Royale Rest Cemetery, a meeting involving Minister of Health and Environment Ruddyard Spencer and the residents has been scheduled for Thursday of this week.

The intervention from the Health and Environment Minister was triggered by the residents' protest this morning in the area.

Newstalk 93fm understands that the police had to fire warning shots to control a crowd of protestors after they were called to the scene of a major demonstration by the Shettlewood citizens, protesting two burials which took place at the controversial cemetery in the area.

The residents blocked the main road in the area from early this morning.

According to CCN Liason Officer for the parish, Constable Rohan Reid, as the the police worked to clear roadblocks this afternoon, more were being mounted on roads in the area.

When asked about the reports of shots being fired to disperse the crowd, Constable Reid said he was not able to confirm them.

Despite assurances from the National Environment and Planning Agency, NEPA, the residents say chemicals used in the burial process will contaminate the water resources in the area.

The residents at Shettlewood have been at odds with the Management of Delaphena funeral home over the construction of the cemetery for several months now.

Citizens Action groups have also been in talks with environmental groups to form a coalition, in a bid to fight the establishment of the cemetery.

Several attempts by our newsroom to contact the owners of the Royale Rest Cemetery, about this morning's incident were unsuccessful.
