Police investigating Cuban light bulb scandal has charged PNP politician Kern Spencer...

Embattled People's National Party's Member of Parliament for Nouth East St. Elizabeth Kern Spencer was charged by the police this afternoon.

The former Junior Minister in the Ministry of Energy, Kern Spencer is now in police custody charged with fraud.

Mr. Spencer, businessman Rodney Chin and Coleen Wright, who was a personal assistant to Mr. Spencer were also charged by the Organised Crime Unit.

Sources have told our news centre that the police believe they have unveiled evidence that links Mr. Spencer to criminal actions during his involvement with the Cuban Light Bulb project.

Detectives from the Fraud Squad began questioning the former Energy Junior Minister last week, after the Contractor General's report into the programme suggested the occurrence of criminal acts in the execution of the project.

After the release of that report, Mr. Spencer asked the House of Representatives for a Leave of Absence which expires at the end of the Parliamentary year on March 31.

He also took a leave of absence from all leadership positions in the People's National Party.

Kern Spencer has consistently asserted his innocence of all wrong doings and said recently that he just wants to be treated like any other Jamaican in the investigation of this matter.
