Cement company workers protesting at Rockfort plant...
,
Regular operations at the Rockfort Plant of the Caribbean Cement Company Limited has grounded to a halt as workers there are now protesting what they say are unfair changes made to their pension plan.

Disgruntled workers, who this morning blocked the Sir Florizel Glasspole Boulevard in the vicinity of the cement company, have walked off the job.

One staff member at the plant explained that the workers are frustrated with government's refusal to allow the company to issue pensions in one time settlements to employees once they have terminated their contracts.

The staff member noted that this used to be the case before the laws were changed in 2005, making it mandatory for pensions to be paid over in small regular installments instead of a lump sum payment.

She says the changes affects all categories of workers at the plant and does not stand to benefit older persons with multi million dollar pensions.

The employees are also upset about government's failure thus far to meet with them, their unions, or the company about the matter.

The workers are now calling on the Finance and Labour Ministers to respond to their concerns.

This morning the employees used heavy objects, including tractors, to block the Sir Florizel Glasspole Boulevard, leaving traffic backed up for hours.

The police have since cleared the road block, but the over 300 workers protesting the pension plan are still milling outside the cement company, determined that work will not resume today.
