Cabinet to discuss fate of the JUTC
June 30th, 2008 , 5:00pm
Cabinet meeting to discuss the way forward for the problem plagued jamaica urban bus company...

No fingers are currently being pointed at any staff member at the Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC; despite reports that an employee who was on the latest redundancy list, may have been responsible for the murder of the bus company's chairman, Douglas Chambers.

Transport Minister, Mike Henry made the disclosure this morning, while speaking on the Breakfast Club.

Mr. Chambers was shot about 12 times in front of the JUTC's Spanish Town Depot on Friday, during a break from a meeting with the union representing employees on the company's redundancy list.

Minister Henry, says however, that Mr. Chambers had received threats to his life in the past, during meetings with workers.

The Transport Minister is discussing the way forward for the company in the Cabinet meeting today, which involves Prime Minister Bruce Golding and the Management of the JUTC.

The police say they have been collecting statements from a number of persons since Friday, and have been following numerous leads, with a view to identifying suspects in Mr. Chambers' murder.

Meanwhile, the Transport Minister should be meeting with the unions representing workers at the JUTC today.

According to Minister Henry, a deadline of Wednesday has been set for a decision to be made on whether to make some workers redundant.

Reports have surfaced that some bus drivers have refused to be trained to collect fares as part of plans to have single person carriers.

It's believed that these drivers will remain on the redundancy list if they do not accept the proposal and go through the required training.

The Transport Minister says the idea is for the drivers to be equipped to collect fares in place of conductors; a move which he says is in keeping with international standards.

Minister Henry says a decision is to be made in the next two days, on about 60 persons.

Meanwhile, the Transport Minister says careful consideration will be given to the selection of the next JUTC Chairman.

The Minister assumed the position of Chairman of the bus company shortly after the death of Mr. Chambers.
